Darah Vining is in her fifth year as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC). She was appointed to the role on May 16, 2020, and has since made a significant impact on the athletics department, leading the Clippers through both growth and success.

Before joining SPSCC, Vining spent three years as the lead Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Northwest University (NU), where she helped elevate the program to new heights. Her experience at the four-year collegiate level has been invaluable, bringing a high level of expertise to SPSCC and offering a unique perspective on the dedication and commitment needed for student-athletes to excel.

“She brings her expertise of coaching at a four-year level and understands the dedication and commitment it takes for student-athletes to be successful,” said SPSCC Athletics Director Vernell Willingham.

A native of Federal Way, Washington, Vining graduated from the University of Providence in Great Falls, Montana, in 2017, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business and Administration. She was a standout player on the women’s basketball team, playing guard and helping lead the team to its first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. Vining was also an Academic All-American, exemplifying the balance between athletics and academics. In 2020, she completed her Master of Education from the University of Missouri.

“I’m honored to take on a role that directly supports our student-athletes, athletic director, and coaches, and that fosters an environment for student-athletes to achieve excellence in education, athletics, and life,” Vining said. “I’m very excited to bring my skills and experience to serve and assist in leading this department through growth, challenges, and long-term success.”

Coaching Highlights at SPSCC:

• 2020-21: In her first season at the helm, the SPSCC Women’s Basketball team was unable to compete due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• 2021-22: Coach Vining led the Clippers back to the NWAC Championship Tournament for the first time since 2016. The team finished with an 11-9 record, earning the fourth seed from the West Region. They recorded seven West Region wins, the most since 2016-17. Vining’s leadership earned her the NWAC West Region Coach of the Year award. Additionally, Sharay Trotter and Payten Foster received All-Region honors, with Trotter being named West Region Defensive Player and Freshman of the Year.
• 2022-23: The Clippers had a standout season with a 19-10 overall record, including ten regional victories, which earned them the second seed from the West Region. The team advanced to the NWAC Championship Tournament, where they were eliminated in the Sweet Sixteen by North Idaho College, 67-55. Sharay Trotter and Payten Foster earned All-Region honors once again, with Trotter being named West Region Defensive Player of the Year and Player of the Year.
• 2023-24: The Clippers battled through a competitive schedule, finishing with an 11-15 record. Despite challenges throughout the year, the team demonstrated resilience and growth under Head Coach Darah Vining. The Clippers showed flashes of brilliance, securing key wins and building momentum as the season progressed. With a mix of returning players and fresh talent, the team gained valuable experience that will serve them well in future seasons.
• 2024-25: The 2024-2025 SPSCC Women’s Basketball team had an incredible season, finishing with a 21-9 record, the best since the early 2000s. The team made an exciting run to the NWAC Elite 8, marking their first appearance in this stage of the tournament since 2005. Sophomore Forward/Center Taylor Teeple earned First Team honors for her outstanding performance, while teammates Bryten Gumke and Vy Tran were named to the Second Team. Freshman Forward/Center Jaynee Tanner had a breakout season, earning Co-Freshman of the Year, First Team recognition, and All-Defensive Team honors. The Clippers' success was a result of hard work, determination, and strong teamwork. With this historic achievement, the SPSCC women's basketball program is poised for continued success in the future.
