Clipper Golfers Have Great Showing at NWAC Championships

YAKIMA, Wash. — Clipper Golf Team members Luke Fenner and Grace Hurley had a fantastic showing at the NWAC Golf Championships with Fenner finishing in the top 10 for the men and Hurley ending the tournament in the top 30 of all the ladies in the conference.

In their first year of existence, the South Puget Sound Golf program had three individual golfers qualify for the NWAC Golf Championships. Vicki Steigner was not able to make the trip to Yakima.

Fenner had a great first day, finishing 5 over par with a total gross score of 77. The second day was an even better day for Fenner, as he sank two birdie putts in the first five holes that got him off to a hot start early on. From there, it was smooth sailing for Fenner as he notched another birdie in the back nine to finish +2 for the day. Overall, Fenner finished +7 with a total gross score of 151 which was enough for a 10th place tie with Cole Jaworski from Spokane.

Hurley had a bit of a rocky start on the first day, but was able to regain her composure on her second day — finishing the day with an 18-stroke difference from the previous round. Overall, Hurley finished the tournament in 28th place, above three other competitors and one other that withdrew at the start of the tourney.

This put a cap on a fantastic first year for SPSCC Golf, and now Clipper Head Coach Russell Olsen looks forward to the future of the program. He spoke about having a complete women’s team, a full recruiting class under his belt, and is expecting to have both men’s and women’s team competing at next year’s championship tournament.
