Clipper WBB Handily Defeats Tacoma in First Conference Game, Extends Win Streak to 8

To say that the Clipper Women’s Basketball team is on a roll is an understatement. In their first conference game, the Clippers ran rampant on Tacoma, winning in convincing fashion by a score of 92-40.

With that win, the Clips have now extended their winning streak to an impressive eight straight games as they begin their journey into conference play.

“It was a great win for our first game, but I think we definitely can’t settle right now,” said Freshman Guard Monroe Mastro, who finished the game with 19 points. “We’re really looking to get going and start pushing the pace even more because we have bigger competition coming up.”

The Clippers got off to a hot start in the first quarter ending the period with a 14-point lead and Mastro led the charge with 9 points in the first. The Clipper ladies never looked back after that as they kept pouring on the offense while also playing stifling defense, keeping the Titans under 12 points per quarter.

All around, it was a great team effort as the frontcourt starters (Mastro, Jaynee Tanner, and Taylor Teeple) contributed a majority of the points while also receiving a big boost from the bench players, who supplied 25 points to the win. Not to mention that reigning NWAC Women’s Athlete of the Week, Taylor Teeple, ended the game with yet another double-double notching 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Although the team ran like a well-oiled machine, there were some aspects of the team’s play that needed some fine-tuning according to Head Coach Darah Vining. “Even though we’re at where we are at, some nerves came into tonight’s game and we’re learning how to clean that up in conference to be able to compete at a higher level consistently,” said Vining. “Once we do, that will keep us on track to reach our goal of hopefully doing something special at the end of conference.”

Clipper WBB’s next two games are at home at the SPSCC Health and Wellness Center’s main gym, Wednesday Jan. 15 against Highline at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday Jan. 18 versus Lower Columbia at 1 p.m. Be sure to come on out to cheer on our Clipper Basketball squads!
